John's silence may be directly proportionate to the noise Wrench makes while moving about. He can be stealthy when he needs to; he just doesn't bother most of the time. And here in Numbers' home, he's not bothering with too much of anything. It's a sure sign that the man isn't trying to avoid being caught. Though it's entirely possible for someone to mean harm blatantly and openly. He knows that from experience, and so he can't fault anyone who assumes similar.

It doesn't strike Wrench as strange that Numbers hasn't come to greet him yet. He assumes the man's just caught up in something. Or maybe he's out, in which case the vacant house might as well be his for the exploring. Wrench is still baffled that they have homes. It's a hundred times nicer than anything he's ever known, and he happily beelines for the kitchen to see what the bachelor of the house has in his refrigerator.
