"I understand." She doesn't have to explain why. He doesn't think any less of her not wanting to get back into the fray. They carry enough baggage with them to last several lifetimes. They've already given their whole lives to the military - ultimately it doesn't mean any more or any less regardless of how they choose to serve out the rest of their days.
